Zebra’s, Ham and Honey-Webinar 2023-WBT

In EMS we are often educated to not look for “Zebra’s” This is one Zebra you will want to look for. This course will look at a common everyday item that has led to injuries and death of previously healthy pediatric patients. Most recent data shows that over 3500 patients are seen in hospital emergency departments for this problem every year in the United States. How can EMS recognize this problem? What can EMS look for when they encounter a patient who is affected by this “Zebra”? What types of treatment should EMS deliver to this patient?

Learning Objectives

Upon completion the student will be able to:

  • Recognize the common signs and symptoms that may be particular to the accidental ingestion of a button battery.
  • Discuss the dangers of Button Battery ingestion in a child under age 6
  • Identify the anatomical structures involved and how that could potentially be life threatening if not recognized immediately.
  • Describe a prehospital treatment modality that is now recommended by the poison control center and many pediatric hospitals across the nation.
