Learning Objectives

Learning Objective: By the end of the EMS Environmental Emergencies class, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize common environmental emergencies encountered in pre-hospital settings, including but not limited to:
    • Heat-related illnesses (heat exhaustion, heat stroke)
    • Cold-related injuries (hypothermia, frostbite)
    • Poisoning due to environmental toxins (chemical, biological, or radiological)
    • Allergic reactions triggered by environmental factors (e.g., insect stings, plant exposure)
    • Near-drowning incidents and water-related emergencies
    • Wilderness emergencies (e.g., animal bites, environmental hazards)
  1. Demonstrate proficiency in conducting rapid scene assessments to identify environmental hazards and prioritize patient care interventions accordingly.
  2. Apply appropriate treatment protocols for managing environmental emergencies, including:
    • Implementing measures to prevent further exposure and minimize patient harm.
    • Utilizing appropriate methods for temperature regulation (cooling or warming techniques).
    • Administering antidotes or supportive care for toxin exposures.
    • Implementing first aid measures for common environmental injuries
