Ski Patrollers Program will use class lecture(s), hands-on practical’s and scenarios to review topics. All topics structured after National Ski Patrol’s, Outdoor Emergency Care, Refresher Cycle C Program.

Learning Objectives

 OBJECTIVES:

Airway/Respiration/Ventilation objectives include: students review, practice, verbally describe actions and demonstrate application/use of: airway suction (rigid and flexible suction catheters); oropharyngeal airway to; nasopharyngeal; O2 administration (including different O2 tanks and regulator assembly); nasal canula; non-rebreather mask; bag-valve mask. Students will be required to individually demonstrate hands-on skills using provided manikins and other equipment as required.

 

Trauma objectives include: students to review, practice and demonstrate of spinal immobilization. Spinal immobilization will require students to work in teams to demonstrate patient: back boarding from a lying down position, back boarding from a seated position, C-Collar sizing and application, pelvic wrap, fractured pelvic backboard utilizing scoop, ski helmet removal, ski boot removal (ski and board), demonstrate patient drags, lifts and carries, and demonstrate recovery of patients from ‘jams & pretzels’ to anatomic position. Trauma will include review, practice and demonstrate care for closed soft-tissue injuries: hematoma, crush injury (closed), compartment syndrome; describe and demonstrate care for open soft-tissue injuries: amputation, avulsion, open crush injury; describe and demonstrate care to control bleeding, including application of tourniquet; describe and demonstrate how to apply dressing and bandage, occlusive for sucking chest wound and stabilizing dressing; explain and demonstrate how to assess and care for burn(s).

 

Medical objectives include: students review, practice and demonstrate proper care of patient who has abused a substance and been poised; how to assess patient injured following encounter with toxic plant(s); exposure to topical toxin; manage following pediatric illnesses and injuries: animal bite and abdominal pain.

 

Operations objectives include review of MCI that includes: describe and demonstrate how to ensure scene safety (hands-on skills, BSI, scene safety management); describe and demonstrate how to use the ID-ME triage tag system and the START triage system. Review of Loveland Ski Area specific MCI protocol(s) to include lecture, questions & answers and group participation in MCI scenario. Scenario to take place outdoors at the Loveland Ski Area with multiple patients.

 

Colorado State Topics Case Management: objectives include case study, includes review and discussion. Patient Assessment objectives include review, practice and demonstrate patient assessment for adult and pediatric patients (both medical and trauma) using the National Ski Patrol, Outdoor Emergency Care patient assessment criteria (5-parts: scene size-up, primary assessment w/ABCD, history taking, secondary assessment and reassessment); demonstrate how to assess the pupils and eye movement (PEERL); demonstrate how to assess the following vitals: pulse, respirations, blood pressure (auscultation & palpation), oxygen saturation (using pulse oximeter); demonstrate how to assess chest for trauma using LAP method (listen, auscultation, palpation). Additional objects to include describe and demonstrate: how to communicate with a pediatric patient; how to assess a pediatric patient using Ped Assessment Triangle.
